The Gloag Foundation's Focus Area: Health

The Gloag Foundation's Involvement: My first experience of Liberia came when I visited the Mercy Ship docked at Monrovia in 2005. I was also acutely aware of the problem of obstetric fistula in Africa and was keen to do something to help the many women suffering with fistula on the continent. In subsequent talks with President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, I agreed to lend my support to the refurbishment of the John F Kennedy Memorial Hospital in exchange for a commitment by Liberia to provide a dedicated obstetric fistula unit for women at JFK. In May 2008, I founded the Freedom From Fistula Foundation charity with the vision for all women in Africa to have access to healthcare during pregnancy and childbirth and to help eradicate obstetric fistulas. Two renovated floors at the JFK Hospital were officially opened in March 2009 following an extensive 18 month refit which I personally funded. It was a great honour to be awarded the Order of The Star of Africa by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf during the handover ceremony. The Freedom From Fistula Foundation now supports the work of the JFK Hospital fistula programme by funding surgeries and training programmes as well as providing equipment and supplies.
